There is no greater time to practice generosity and kindness than the holiday season. It is a time filled with warmth and love. A time to spend with those closest to you and to share joy, laughter and light. There are countless opportunities to give and to spread cheer to those who need it most during this celebratory time. Here are some of the ways that you can make a difference this holiday season.
Donate or volunteer at a local food bank
There is always a great need for food donations and volunteers at Feed NS and other individual food banks in Nova Scotia communities, especially during the holidays. Non-perishable, as well as some perishable, items can be dropped off at food bank locations, or at drop-off bins often found in Walmart stores across the province as well as Sobeys and Atlantic Superstores in the HRM. You can even purchase a turkey for a family in need for just $25 through Feed NS. If you have time to spare, consider organizing a food drive at your office, or in your neighborhood, or volunteering your time during the busy November and December months. If you are interested in volunteering you can call 902-457-1900 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
For some, there is no greater gift than a blood donation. Healthy blood is needed for regular transfusions as well as in emergency situations for those suffering from conditions such as severe anemia, severe trauma as well as some complex medical procedures. Just by giving blood this season, you could save the lives of those in need. There is a large number of clinics across the province that you can visit to donate. You can find clinics closest to you on the Canadian Blood Services Website.
Donate to a homeless shelter
During the cold winter months, those without a home are in great need of warmth. Donations of items such as blankets, hats, mitts and coats are in great need throughout the holidays. You could organize a coat collection at your workplace, or with your community. Each small item can help someone through the cold winter nights.
Donate or volunteer at an animal shelter
During the holidays, share some love with the furry friends at the local animal shelters. Donating food or toys to help care for the animals can make this season brighter for those staying over the winter months. If you have spare time to give, volunteer at the shelters to give the animals a chance to play and feel loved. Keep these shelters in mind when considering purchasing pets as gifts during the holidays.
Donate to the cause of your choice
There is a never-ending list of deserving causes to give to during the holidays. Each worthy cause, no matter how small, makes a difference in the world. Find a cause that is close to your heart, or an initiative you are passionate about. Consider an annual gift to your favourite charity, or giving a donation on behalf of a loved one as a gift.
It doesn’t take much to change the lives of others this holiday. Whether it is an item, money or time that you give, know that it will make a difference for someone in need this season. You’ll find that when giving, you also receive, the joy and warmth that comes with helping others. Visit our website to see how you can donate to local causes that matter at www.cfns-fcne.ca.
As one of the only province-wide organizations to leverage collaboration and effective philanthropy to address the specific needs of our citizens and communities, we hope you will consider the foundation as part of your year-end giving. Contributing to our sustainability only helps us continue to focus on the work that matters most!
Happy Holidays, and may the joy of giving be with you this season.
